The word Kelliwick has its source in Cornish, Celtic & Arthurian history with a range of spellings. (Kelliwick, Kelliwic, Kelliwik, Gelliwig, Gelli Wic, Kellywick, Killiwick to name but a few. This gave us a bit of a headache when deciding on how to spell our name. ) Many early historical sources agree that King Arthur’s court was called Celliwig (Translates as ‘the forest grove’ ) and was to be found in Cornwall. The name probably first appears in the Arthurian poem Pa gur yv y porthaur?, which dates from the 8th Century. The legend claims kelliwick to be one of the ancient seats of King Arthurs power, with Callington being one of the few candidates for the location of this ancient 'castle'.
